the beginning…

going home tomorrow… its been a wonderful two and a half weeks… today is our last day together… i don’t know what to think… whether to be happy that we made such beautiful memories… or to be sad that our time together, for now, is coming to an end…

the project i’d stayed back to work on is anything but tending to completion… coding is such a thing that you cannot anticipate where a ’segmentation fault’ will creep up and turn your night’s sleep into a jumble of contemplations of loops and assignment statements… to add insult to injury, the department computer room – medusa – is being used as the venue for the mtech interviews… so we can work from only 1pm today… i wonder if we’ll be able to get the program running by 5pm…

all the seniors say that if you stay back for a project, more often than not, you’ll give up and go home… and when your prof doesn’t care a damn about whether you’re working or not, you really feel no incentive to put up a fight… i mean, if he doesn’t ask you by himself how the work is going or whether you’ll be able to complete it before the deadline, and the only interaction you have with him is when you go and ask him your doubts and even then he doesn’t have some concrete solutions – its frustrating… sure i’m enjoying what i’m doing, but it would be so much better if sir cared i was doing something…

are you doing it with a c program ?? gosh, why not matlab !? :)
give me a clarification. what will the program do ? give nanoparticle radiuses from random-generated micelles ? or something else ? and how would you predict the kinetics of the process, by the program or theoretically ?

juturna says : yes, we’re doing in via a c++ program… not matlab because it will simply take infinitely more time in matlab… like, the same hundred lines of our code in cpp took maybe 4 seconds and matlab took a minute or so… and when you’re running 1500 lines of code 10,000 times, it makes more sense to code in c++…

anyway, back to my project… what our program does is that it creates 10,000 micelles… distributes AgNO3 in half of them and NaBH4 in the other half… the program generates random numbers and based on the probability interval in which they lie, the event is chosen… so, in the end, we get nanoparticles in the micelles and the aim of the program is to print the particle size distribution (PSD) of the formed nanoparticles (because obviously, the size of the nanoparticles is their most important property and you’d like to know that by tweaking which parameters, how your PSD would get affected)

unfortunately, on the last day of coding (day before yesterday) a very random segmentation fault was born… :( i hope i can figure it out when i get back in july…

right now, its hols :) one week in calcutta, one week at andaman and 4 weeks at home… the best summer of my life yet :)

ohoho … i guess the project you are talking about is the one under sanjay mahajani. what’s it about ??
i wrote the last comment thinking of the UROP project. what about that ?

juturna says : hey… project under prof sanjay mahajani was scrapped for the UROP… i’ve replied in detailed about the UROP in your previous comment :)

yep, i was thinking the same line … u know, u can simulate ‘e’ basically by the same way you are doing this ! in fact it’d be easier :)

juturna says : oh nice! i thought such things would be possible and you’ve clarified my thoughts :)
